Origin of Yi Chuan

Yi Chuan (Mind Fist) was formulated by Grand Master Wang Xiang Zhai (1886-1963), a well- known student of the famous Hsing Yi boxer, Guo Yun Shen. In the course of his study, Grand Master Wang absorbed the principles of Hsing Yi Chuan, the soft power of Tai Chi Chuan, and the dexterity, quickness of action and nimbleness of Pa Kua Chuan - the three major internal martial art styles. He also learned the practice of standing meditation founded by Bodhidharma, the first patriarch of Ch'an (or Zen) Buddhism in China. Bringing all these influences together, the Yi Chuan practice of Grand Master Wang is perhaps the highest form of Chinese internal energy development.

Grand Master Wang's method of training was unique. In contrast to those martial artists who practiced only the external forms, he emphasized practicing and developing internal force. To Grand Master Wang, without the inner, mind practice, developing other skills was like putting the cart before the horse. The art of Yi Chuan that he created was based on the concept that one's mind control one's form.

Yi Chuan combines the essential parts of every style of martial art. That is why it is popularly called Da Cheng Chuan (Great Achievement Boxing). The source of its power is the secret training of standing meditation. Masters have generally been reluctant to offer their prized exercises to the public, teaching them only to one or two favorite students. Grand Master Wang offered the essential principles and forms of Yi Chuan to all his students, and they have continued to transmit this rare art to this day.
